Dream Spirit Cheer Gym distinguishes itself through a strong focus on safety. We prioritize the well-being of our athletes by implementing rigorous training protocols and fostering a nurturing environment. Our experienced coaches emphasize proper techniques and injury prevention, ensuring that every practice and performance adheres to the highest safety standards. At Dream Spirit, safety is a core value that empowers our cheerleaders to build skills and confidence while excelling in their cheerleading journey. With that being said, this blog is intended to highlight the key elements in level 1 tumbling while highlighting important safety measures.

FORWARD ROLLS

To safely perform a forward roll, begin by standing with your feet together. Bend at the knees and place your hands flat on the ground, shoulder-width apart. Tuck your head down toward your chest, ensuring your chin is tucked to protect your neck. Push off your feet as you roll forward, maintaining a rounded shape - think of putting the back of your shoulders on the ground. As you roll, keep your legs tucked in tight to your body, allowing for a smooth motion. Finally, as you complete the roll, use your momentum to stand up without using your hands, landing lightly on your feet to ensure a safe and controlled finish.

Many kids struggle with tucking their chin during a forward roll, which can lead to a painful landing. When the chin isn't tucked, the head remains extended, causing the back to hit the ground with greater force. This not only increases the risk of injury but also makes the roll less fluid. Encouraging proper technique, like keeping the chin tucked, helps protect their neck and spine, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience while mastering this skill.

Some kids find it challenging to stand up after a forward roll because they untuck their legs too early in the motion. When they extend their legs prematurely, it disrupts their balance and momentum, making it difficult to transition smoothly to a standing position. This can lead to falls or awkward landings, which can be frustrating and discourage them from practicing. Emphasizing the importance of keeping their legs tucked until they complete the roll helps them maintain control and improves their ability to stand up confidently afterward.
